I have always been an avid, rabid, passionate, loyal Philadelphia sports fan.

MEMORY: On May 19th 1974, The Philadelphia Flyers played The Boston Bruins in game six of the Stanley Cup. The Flyers were ahead in the series 3-2, and if they won this game at home, they would take home their first Stanley Cup. I sat in row six of the upper deck just about at the red line.

HISTORY: That year the Flyers were 36-3-1. In the deciding sixth game of the Stanley Cup, 17,707 hockey fans went berserk when it was announced that Kate Smith would be singing God Bless America live instead of the National Anthem.

OUTCOME: It was by far the most emotional moment I’ve ever experienced at a sporting event. After Kate Smith sang, thousands of fans were crying, me included. The Flyers won the game one to nothing and a million Philadelphia fans attended the parade the next day. Watch Kate Smith’s version of Irving Berlin’s legendary God Bless America here.
